Reflections after visiting the Children's Home - Part 1

Hi all,
today was my 2nd visit to the same Children's Home with you guys, CABIN members! :) Yup, it was an awesome experience. This week, we did cermaic mugs painting, and each of us got a souvenior back as well!

Similar to last week, when I saw the children at the Home, (of course they came from dsyfunctional families - abusive parents, parents in prisons, parents going through divorce/separation, children who have been abandanoed, etc), my heart just went out to them. It was in fact quite a heart-wrenching experience when I though about it. I felt rather sad for the children to be honest, and kind of angry at the adults' irresponsible behaviour.

However, on the bright side, I felt thankful for them, that at least, they have a place to stay, with lots of material comforts. What they need is proper guidance from good and positive role models, older brothers/sisters, whom they can look up to. I hope you guys, CABIN members, realised, or at least I observed, that many of the children actually model/imitate your behaviour, be them good or bad. Yup, children are very easily influenced. They are like sponges, just absorb and absorb, so maybe each of us can reflect about our own behaviour and what come of behaviour the children around us are imitating... (reflection time - 5mins)

Yup, I think through these visits, and after much reflections, I have learnt to appreciate my family members even more, and would perform even more acts of kindness towards them! :)

Right now, I just want to take this opportunity to thank all the CABIN members who have gone down for the past STL projects @ the Home these past two weeks. Thank you for giving it your best shot though it was the a first time for most of you! I really appreciate the time, effort, going down to the Home, for the love you've spread to the other children. :)

STL 1- Kai Hui (thank you for teaching many of us how to make the double design for the beads),
Kimmey (thank you for always being so enthusiastic and so willing to come for the events, and keep the smiles on~ :) ),
Syahirah (you've always being a conscientious and responsible girl to me, keep on keeping on!), Karthik (though on the surface, you're always joking, I can see that you really care, be true to yourself! in fact, I can see a leader in you, have faith that you can excel in the things you try to do! You rock! :) ),
Gorden (always helpful, always extending a hand to help others, very practical and logical always, fun-loving as well, but knows when to be serious =)),
Glen (the boys at the Home asked abt u today, they missed you. To me, Glen here is a fun-loving teenager with his sense of humour. A simple, practical person as well. Study hard Glen!! :))
Joey (for your bubbling personality and straightforward attitude)
Farah (for being so loving)
Wen Hui (for making the effort to come down, and being honest in my 'dealings' with you as well, thank you!)
Cher Wee - for being so kind, considerate, and loyal as well (in your way ^-^)

Bully-Free Inter-CABIN Compeition Guidelines

Hi all CABIN members,

below is the competition guidelines, pls read through it. If you don't understand anything, feel free to tag or sms me! Check for your group competition dates and grouping either in CABIN (Your group's date of competition and allotted time has been posted up in CABIN already! :) or my next post today! :)

Bully-Free Inter-CABIN Competition Guidelines

1. Each team consisting must consist of 3 CClub members. (Note from Chunshan: But for Category A, 3 – 4 CClub members is fine.)

2. Each team must have a group name and choose a title for their presentation

3. Each team will have ten minutes for their presentation before the judges and then judges will have three minutes to ask the students questions. Presentations must be at least 7 minutes long but no longer than 10 minutes.

4. The components of the presentation that will be judged are
a. Oral presentation skills (15 marks)
b. Overall presentation (10 marks)
c. Enthusiasm (10 marks)
d. Team Work (10 marks)
e. Creativity (5 marks)
Each component will be totaled to form the team's final score and used in determining the winners

5. The order of presentation will be decided by the drawing of numbers. Each team will retain the same number throughout the competition. The drawing will take place prior to the competition.

6. All teams will be informed of the date, time and venue of their presentation during the week of Feb 25 - 28

7. All teams must arrive to the venue of the competition 30 minutes before their allotted presentation time slot.

8. Team members are required to wear their school uniforms for the competition.

9. Teams may organize team members in any way, but are reminded all 3 team members must participate in the oral presentation.

10. Members will be allowed to bring prepared visual aids to be used during the oral presentation. Example of visual aids: videos, posters, power point presentations etc. Creativity is strongly encouraged

11. Each member of the group is allowed to use note cards (not bigger than ½ A4 size) to aid them in their presentation.

12. A panel of 3 judges will score the presentation.

13. The judges’ decisions are irrevocable.

Impt note when u check out your allotted time--> All participants to come 30 mins before their allotted time of competition. For e.g., if your allotted time of competition is 11.00AM, you would have to reach the compeition venue at BLk 91, Henderson Rd, #01-112, S(150091) by 10.30AM for registration. Thank you!

Trial Rehearsal of bully-free Inter-CABIN competition at CABIN from 2pm onward on 5th March 08

Hi participants of this year Bully-free Inter-CABIN competition! :)

The PRACTICE rehearsal with me would be this coming Wed 05/03 2PM onwards til 5pm @ CABIN! Come PREPARED in your groups with YOUR finalised 7min Presentation.
Pls remember the 3 points to be covered in the 7 minute presentation: 1) Your understanding of school bullying (e.g. what school bullying is, harmful effects on victims, bystanders and bullies), 2) Your personal attitude towards school bullying. 3) Ideas for a 1 week bully-free campaign to be held in school. Also, after the 7min presentation, there would be a 3mins Question & Answers from the judges on what you have presented and bully-free related things that you might have missed out!

Do read up on bully-free information either from the blue booklet given to you or @ www.bullyfreecampaign.sg a website created by Singapore's Children Society! =) for Q & A part!

NYC students manning the NYC bully-free exhibition and games booths can come after their duty to CABIN from 3pm onwards! (To the NYC students: Thank you for your hard work and effort. I appreciate you guys and believe most of you had fun manning the booths for the past week! )
